Why "it's just panels and a fan" is the expensive assumption
A booth is the visible part of an assembly that also includes exhaust ducting and the stack, a make-up air unit and its burner, gas supply, electrical service and controls, compressed air, fire detection or suppression, and the building itself — floor, ceiling height, roof, and clearances. - Floor and foundation. Flat floor or pit? Pits mean concrete work, drainage, and inspection. Slab levelness affects how panels seal.

- Exhaust stack routing. Duct run length, turns, and roof penetration — roof work is its own trade and permit.
- Make-up air path. Outside air access, intake location, and how far the AMU sits from where it delivers.
- Gas supply. Line size, pressure, and run length. A longer run or an undersized line starves the burner — a common root cause of air make-up unit problems at a new site.
- Electrical. Service capacity, panel space, and conductor runs to the booth and AMU.
- Compressed air. Distribution to the booth and mix room, plus adequate supply.
- Fire protection. Detection, suppression, and tie-ins to the building alarm.
- Access and egress. Clearances, aisle widths, and how vehicles and parts get in and out.
Permitting and code: expect current requirements, not grandfathering
Mechanical, electrical, and fire permits are typically required. Your local building department and fire marshal set expectations, and NFPA 33 concepts govern how spray application spaces are built and ventilated. What surprises owners most: relocating usually triggers current code rather than whatever was acceptable at the old site.
This depends entirely on your authority having jurisdiction — verify locally before you budget. Gas piping, electrical, sprinkler, and roof work are performed by licensed trades you contract directly.

What drives the timeline
Timeline is usually set by four things: permit review in your jurisdiction, lead time on replacement parts and custom ducting fabrication, trade scheduling, and whether the destination site is ready when the truck arrives. Plan production around a realistic outage window and build in slack — the shops that get hurt scheduled paint work assuming zero slippage.

Hardware and seals go missing or get damaged during disassembly. Panels that sealed fine for a decade sometimes won't re-seal on a different floor. Ductwork frequently can't be reused — often cheaper to fabricate new than fight old. Utilities at the new site turn out undersized once someone measures. And the biggest one: a booth that "works" but was never rebalanced.
