Repair or Replace Your Old Paint Booth? How to Decide

Signs your booth is nearing end of life

Every spray booth has a service life, and the equipment usually tells you when it's getting close. Watch for a cluster of these rather than any single one: repeat breakdowns of the same components (burner, blower motors, controls) despite recent repairs; rising gas and electric bills as the AMU loses efficiency; finish-quality problems you can't fully chase down; rusted-through panels or a cabin that no longer holds pressure; and obsolete controls or parts that are hard to source. One of these is a repair. Several together often mean the booth is telling you it's near the end.

The real cost of repeat repairs

A single repair is easy to justify. The trap is the slow drip of repeat repairs that quietly add up to more than the booth is worth. Add up what you've spent over the last 12–24 months on service calls, parts, and lost production. If that number is a meaningful fraction of a new or refurbished booth — and it's climbing each year — the math starts favoring replacement. Look at the trend, not the last invoice.

Downtime and lost production

This decision isn't only about parts and labor — it's about the jobs you can't run while the booth is down. Every hour a booth sits waiting on a repair is lost throughput, delayed cars, and pressure on the rest of your schedule. Do the rough math for your shop: what does a day of booth downtime cost you? An older booth that goes down unpredictably several times a year carries a hidden cost a spec sheet never shows.

Efficiency and finish gains from newer equipment

Newer booths and air makeup units are generally more efficient and easier to control. Depending on what you run now, an upgrade can bring better airflow control and more consistent cure temperatures, lower fuel consumption, cleaner finishes with fewer reworks, and modern controls that are simpler to diagnose. When a targeted repair or upgrade is the smart move

Replacement isn't always the answer. Plenty of booths are worth keeping — especially a solid cabin from a well-built brand like Accudraft, Blowtherm, Garmat, GFS, Nova Verta, or USI — where the structure is sound but one system is tired. In those cases, rebuilding an aging burner or AMU while keeping a good cabin, upgrading outdated controls, or reworking filtration to solve a specific finish problem often makes more sense than a full replacement.
