Air Makeup Unit Problems in a Paint Booth: Causes and Fixes

The air makeup unit (AMU) is the hardest-working component on your paint booth, and the one most shops understand the least. It heats and moves the air that makes clean, consistent finishes possible. When the AMU drifts out of spec, you don't always get a dramatic breakdown — you get slow cure times, temperature swings, and finish problems that are easy to blame on everything except the real cause.

What the air makeup unit actually does

The AMU pulls in fresh outside air, heats it to your target temperature, and pushes it through the booth to replace the air being exhausted. It supplies the volume of clean, filtered air that carries overspray away and keeps velocity in spec, and it brings incoming air up to spray and bake temperatures so paint flows and cures properly. Because it controls both airflow and heat, a single fault can show up as an airflow problem, a heat problem, or both — which is why AMU issues get misdiagnosed so often.

Belt, motor, and bearing wear

The blower is driven by a motor and, on most units, a belt-and-pulley system — all wear items. Belts stretch, glaze, and crack; a slipping belt drops blower speed, which drops booth velocity and lets overspray hang in the air. Bearings dry out and wear — listen for squealing, grinding, or a new vibration before a seizure. Motors overheat and lose efficiency, especially when fighting a loaded filter bank. Damper and actuator faults

Dampers control how much air recirculates versus how much fresh air is brought in, and they switch the unit between spray and bake modes. They're driven by actuators and linkages that can stick, bind, or fail. Symptoms include a booth that won't reach or hold bake temperature because the damper isn't closing, poor airflow or pressure balance because the fresh-air damper is stuck, and mode changes that don't happen on command.

Burner and heat-exchanger issues

The burner is where heat and safety intersect, so treat this area with respect. Common faults include ignition failures, flame sensors that need cleaning, gas-pressure problems, and dirty or aging heat exchangers. You may notice the unit locking out, cycling on and off, taking longer to reach temperature, or throwing faults. Because burners involve gas and combustion, this is not a DIY area — a qualified technician should diagnose and repair anything burner-related.

Symptoms owners notice first

You don't need a meter to suspect an AMU problem: longer cure and flash times or paint that won't lay down right; temperature that won't reach setpoint or swings during a cycle; new noise or vibration from the fan section; weak airflow or more overspray hanging in the booth; and the unit locking out or tripping faults.
