Booth Heater and Burner Service: Beyond “It Won’t Light”

Most shops only think about the heater when it stops working. But a burner rarely fails out of nowhere — it degrades for weeks or months first, and it tells you so if you know what to watch. Paint booth burner service is the work that happens in that window: catching drift, contamination, and wear while the booth is still making money, instead of after a lockout kills a bake with a customer's car in it. What regular paint booth burner service actually addresses
A burner is a deliberately tuned system: fuel and combustion air proportioned, flame sensed and proved, airflow proved, temperature limited, and the whole thing sequenced by a control that will not let a stage happen out of order. Every one of those elements drifts.
- Combustion drifting out of adjustment. Linkages wear, dampers shift, air density changes, and the mixture is no longer where it was set. The burner still runs — just less efficiently, less cleanly, and closer to its limits.
- Dirty flame sensing. The sensing element picks up a film or oxide layer and the signal weakens. The control still sees flame — until it does not, for a second, and drops out. That is the classic intermittent lockout that clears on reset, and the reason nobody investigates until the third time in a week.
- Heat exchanger condition (on indirect-fired systems). Its integrity is what keeps combustion products out of the air entering the booth. That inspection is a technician's job, and not optional.
- Air proving and pressure switch behavior. These confirm airflow before fuel is allowed. Switches age, tubing plugs, sensing ports contaminate. A marginal switch produces intermittent no-starts that look random.
- Limit devices. Temperature limits shut the system down when something is wrong. A limit that trips is doing its job. The correct response is finding out why it saw that condition — never defeating, jumpering, or "adjusting" it to stop the nuisance.
- Gas train components. Valves, regulators, and their safety devices are inspected, tested, and documented — and adjusted by nobody but a qualified technician. Ever.
Symptoms that mean the burner is degrading, not failing
The ones shops live with for months because the booth "still works":
- Soot or scale as evidence. Black deposits around the burner area or discoloration on stack components point to incomplete combustion. Do not clean it off and move on — it is the diagnostic.
- Burner short-cycling. Firing and dropping out repeatedly during a bake instead of holding a steady stage. Hard on the whole ignition sequence, and usually a control, sensing, or airflow issue.
- Slow ramp. The bake that used to reach setpoint in a predictable window now takes noticeably longer. Nothing has "broken," but something changed.
- Temperature swing and overshoot. The booth climbs past setpoint, drops well below, and hunts. Your paint sees a very different cure than the schedule specifies, even if the controller eventually looks right.
- Lockouts that clear on reset. One is a data point. A pattern is a service call.

Why a healthy burner can look sick
This is the part shops miss most often. A burner lives inside an airflow system. If the booth is starved for makeup air, if supply and exhaust are out of balance, or if filters are loaded past changeout, the burner is heating under conditions it was never set up for — and you get slow ramp, temperature swing, and nuisance lockouts on a burner that is mechanically fine.

What an operator can safely observe — and nothing more
Everything below is observation: look, listen, read a display, write it down. That is the entire operator role on a heating system.
- Time-to-temperature trend. Note how long the booth takes to reach bake setpoint and log it weekly. A trend line is worth more to a technician than any single reading.
- Whether the bake holds setpoint or swings. Watch the controller through a full cycle occasionally. Steady hold versus hunting is a real diagnostic.
- Lockout frequency. Keep a written log: date, time, what the control displayed, what the booth was doing.
- Unusual smell or visible smoke at the stack. Report it. Do not investigate it yourself.
- Noise at ignition. A change in the sound — a harder report, a rumble, a delay before it settles — is worth a call if it is new.
- Controller reading versus what the cure schedule needs. If the paint manufacturer's schedule calls for a temperature and duration your booth cannot reliably hold, that is a service issue, not a painting issue.
The hard line: what is never operator work
Nothing on the gas train, burner assembly, flame sensor, limit switches, or control wiring is operator work. Not inspection with tools, not cleaning, not adjustment, not "just checking." These systems combine fuel gas with ignition sources and line-voltage controls inside a fire-rated enclosure, and the safety devices are all that stand between a fault and a serious incident.
Do not bypass, jumper, or defeat any interlock, limit, or proving switch — not even to finish one job. Do not repeatedly reset a lockout to force the burner through. A control that locks out decided a required condition was not met; forcing past it removes the protection and destroys the diagnostic information a technician needs. Repeated lockouts mean stop and call. Putting burner service on a schedule
Burner and heater work belongs on a regular service interval, not a reactive one. A scheduled visit is where combustion gets checked and re-set, sensing surfaces serviced, proving and limit devices tested, the heat exchanger and gas train inspected, and airflow verified — the difference between a planned two hours and an unplanned two days. Frequently asked questions
My burner locks out about once a week and resets fine. Can I keep running it?
No. A repeating lockout is a fault the control is catching, and it usually gets worse. Log the occurrences and schedule booth maintenance instead of resetting it.
Can I clean the flame sensor myself?
No. The flame sensor is part of the safety chain, inside the burner assembly, adjacent to gas and line-voltage components. Cleaning and testing it is qualified-technician work.
Why does my booth take longer to heat than it used to?
Combustion drift, contaminated sensing or proving devices, loaded filters, and an unbalanced booth are all common. It takes measurement to tell which. Track the trend and hand the numbers to your technician.
Is burner service separate from regular booth maintenance?
It should be the same visit. Heating, airflow, filtration, and controls all interact — servicing the burner without verifying the airflow it depends on gets you halfway.
