Paint Booth Burner Won't Ignite? Common Causes and Fixes

A booth burner that will not light stops production cold. Panels sit uncured, the schedule backs up, and every minute the booth is down costs you. The good news is that no-ignition problems usually trace back to a short list of causes. Understanding that list helps you describe the issue accurately and know when it is safe to look versus when to pick up the phone.

How the ignition sequence works

Most booth burners follow a set startup sequence. The control calls for heat, the fan proves airflow, a pressure switch confirms the system is moving air, the gas valve opens, an igniter fires, and a flame sensor confirms the flame is present. If any single step fails to prove out, the control shuts the sequence down as a safety measure and the burner never lights. A burner that refuses to ignite is often a burner doing its job and refusing to run in an unsafe state.

Gas supply and valve issues

No fuel means no flame. Common gas-side causes include a closed or partially closed manual gas shutoff, low supply pressure or an issue affecting other gas appliances at the same time, a failed or stuck gas valve that will not open on command, and air in the line after recent gas work. Confirming that other gas appliances in the building are working is a reasonable first observation. Anything involving the valve itself is technician territory.

Igniter, flame sensor, and control board faults

Even with good gas, the burner needs a spark and a confirmed flame. A worn or cracked igniter may not spark reliably. A dirty or failing flame sensor may not detect the flame, so the control shuts the valve within seconds even though it briefly lit. And a faulty control board can misread inputs or fail to sequence the burner at all. These components are diagnosed with meters and manufacturer specs, not by eye.

Airflow and pressure-switch lockouts

Because the burner will not fire until airflow is proven, airflow problems are one of the most common reasons for a no-ignition call. Loaded intake filters, a slipping or broken fan belt, a failed motor, or a stuck damper can all keep the pressure switch from closing. The burner reads that as "unsafe to fire" and locks out. This is why a burner complaint sometimes turns out to be a filter or belt problem.

Safe reset attempts versus leave-it-to-a-tech

A few checks are reasonable for shop staff: confirm the booth has power and the disconnect is on; verify the control is calling for heat and set correctly; check that intake filters are not visibly loaded and the fan is running; confirm the manual gas valve is open; and try one manufacturer-specified reset if your control has one. Stop there. Do not open the gas train, bypass a safety switch, jump a pressure switch, or repeatedly hit reset to force a light. Those safeties exist to prevent gas buildup and fire. Repeated forced resets are exactly how a nuisance fault becomes a dangerous one.
