Paint Booth Air Pressure Balance: Why It Matters and How to Read It

Air pressure balance is one of the least understood settings on a paint booth — and one of the most important. Get it right and clean air pushes contamination away from your finish. Get it wrong and you fight nibs, door problems, and airflow issues that seem to have no cause.
Positive vs. negative pressure, explained simply
Booth pressure is just the difference between the air being pushed in and the air being pulled out. Positive pressure means the air makeup unit supplies slightly more air than the exhaust removes, so air pushes outward through any gap and dirt can't get in — most booths are designed to run slightly positive for exactly this reason. Negative pressure means exhaust is pulling more than the supply provides, so air rushes inward through door seals, cracks, and the floor, dragging shop dust onto your wet finish. The goal is a slight, controlled positive balance.
How balance affects finish, doors, and leaks
Pressure balance shows up in ways that don't obviously scream "pressure problem." A booth running negative pulls in unfiltered dirt, so contamination often appears near doors and low on panels. Too much positive pressure fights you when you close doors and can blow them open; too negative and doors get sucked shut or seal poorly. Imbalance also makes the booth whistle at seals and can pull fumes into the wrong areas.
Symptoms of an imbalanced booth
You can often feel a balance problem before you measure it: doors that are hard to close, drift open, or slam shut; dust and nibs that got worse without any change in prep habits; overspray hanging in the air longer than it used to; a manometer reading outside the range it used to hold; and air whistling in through seals.
How filter loading changes balance over time
Here's the part shops miss: your booth doesn't stay balanced. As intake and exhaust filters load with overspray, they restrict airflow — and they rarely load at the same rate. When exhaust filters clog faster than intake filters, the booth drifts negative and starts pulling in dirt. This is why a booth that ran perfectly last month can contaminate parts today with no other change. Booth pressure ties into how your booth is designed to contain and exhaust overspray and vapors. Manufacturers and applicable codes generally expect a booth to maintain airflow and pressure within a specified range so it operates as intended.
