Hard starts, repeated lockouts, and flame loss during bake are the most common heat complaints we get. The causes are usually mundane: fouled or drifting flame sensors, ignition electrodes out of position, gas pressure that isn't right at the train, or an airflow proving device not seeing the flow it expects because something upstream is restricted. Slow heat rise and temperature swing

If the booth lights reliably but takes longer to reach bake temperature than it used to, look at heat transfer and airflow before the burner. Loaded intake filters, a dirty heat exchanger, a slipping supply fan belt, or a recirculation damper not reaching its bake position all show up as sluggish heat. Temperature that hunts instead of holding more often points to sensor placement or control tuning. Both want a technician rather than guesswork.

Airflow, filters, and pressure balance

Airflow is where booth performance and finish quality meet. In a downdraft or semi-downdraft cabin, you want clean air entering the ceiling plenum evenly and leaving through the floor or side exhaust without dead spots.

  • Filter loading. Intake and exhaust filters load at different rates. Running either past its life shifts the pressure balance and pulls contamination into the cabin.
  • Manometer neglect. A gauge that's plugged, out of calibration, or unread is your cheapest early-warning signal, gone. Get it verified and get painters logging it.
  • Belts, sheaves, and bearings. A stretched belt quietly costs fan RPM and therefore airflow. Bearing noise is a warning shot — a seized fan bearing is a booth-down day.
  • Dampers and actuators. Dampers that don't fully travel wreck pressure balance and gas efficiency alike. Damper style varies by install; verify yours.
  • Ductwork and stacks. Overspray buildup, loose joints, or a damaged stack cap changes exhaust performance in ways that look like a fan problem.

Doors, seals, and the cabin envelope

The cabin is only as clean as its envelope. Worn seals, sagging doors that no longer close square, failed latches, and gaps at panel joints all let unfiltered shop air in — usually at floor level where the dirt lives. On booths with heavy traffic, hinges and latch hardware wear faster than owners expect.

Light matters too. A clouded or leaking fixture gasket is both a color-matching problem and another contamination path. If you're still replacing ballasts on fluorescent tubes, an LED upgrade is worth pricing.

Controls, sensors, and instrumentation
