Accudraft Paint Booth Troubleshooting and Service

A body shop calls Tuesday morning: the booth fires and heats, but the bake cycle sits fifteen degrees under setpoint and the clear is coming out soft. Three cars are stacked behind it. That is where most Accudraft paint booth troubleshooting actually starts — not with a blinking light, but with a job that came out wrong and a bay that isn't turning.

Accudraft builds a lot of different booths, and configurations vary widely: downdraft and semi-downdraft, direct-fired and indirect-fired, different control generations, different burner and motor packages depending on the year. The same symptom can point to two different causes on two booths wearing the same badge. What follows is general troubleshooting logic applied to the configurations we see most often on Accudraft booth service calls. Write down what changed before you chase the symptom

Booths rarely fail out of nowhere. Something changed, and the fastest diagnosis usually comes from the shop, not the technician:

  • Last filter change — intake, exhaust, and floor or pit filters, with dates. Loaded filters cause more "mystery" symptoms than any other single item.
  • Current manometer readings versus what the gauge read when the booth was new or last balanced.
  • When it started — slow drift over weeks points to filter loading, belt wear, or seal wear. Sudden failure points to a component or a safety trip.
  • What else changed in the building — a new compressor, another exhaust fan, a sealed-up wall, a rooftop unit out of service. Makeup air is building-wide.
  • Weather and gas conditions — extreme cold, high wind on the stack, or low gas pressure in the area.

Accudraft paint booth troubleshooting by symptom

These are the complaints that generate the most service calls, with the causes we check first. On many Accudraft installations they run in roughly this order, but your damper style, burner make, and control generation will shift the priorities.

Booth won't hold bake temperature

Heat that climbs slowly, stalls short of setpoint, or swings is usually an air problem before it is a heat problem:

  • Loaded intake filters starving the burner section of air
  • Recirculation damper not moving fully into bake position — a sticking linkage, a failing actuator, or lost air supply to a pneumatic damper
  • Burner staging or modulation not stepping up correctly
  • A temperature sensor reading off, or mounted where it sees the wrong air
  • Gas supply pressure sagging under full fire, especially with other gas appliances running
  • Heat loss through worn door seals and gaps in the cabin

Dirt and nibs in the finish

Contamination is a pressure and housekeeping problem more often than a filter-quality problem. Check filter condition and seating first, then whether the cabin is actually holding positive pressure against the shop. Torn or bypassing intake filters, gaps around filter frames, a dirty plenum, contaminated air lines, and dirt pulled through unsealed door gaps all show up as the same defect on the panel. Airflow feels weak

If the booth feels dead, sounds different, or won't clear solvent fumes between coats:

  • Exhaust filters loaded past their useful life — the most common cause by a wide margin
  • Slipping or glazed belts, worn sheaves, or a loose motor mount
  • Fan wheel caked with overspray, which throws it out of balance and kills output
  • Motor running on two legs, or a VFD dropped into a reduced-speed mode
  • Restricted exhaust stack or a damper not opening fully
  • The building can't supply the makeup air the booth is pulling

Doors won't seal

Leaking doors cost you heat, cost you cabin pressure, and pull dirt straight into the finish. Look for compressed or torn gasket, latches out of adjustment, sagging hinges, or a door frame that has moved with the building. Control panel won't start a cycle

When the panel refuses to start, it is usually protecting you from something. Depending on how your booth was configured, the interlock chain may include airflow proving, door position, exhaust fan status, emergency stops, and gas train safeties — a single open device stops the sequence. Also check for a tripped overload or breaker, a blown control fuse, and a failed control transformer. Do not jumper an interlock to get a car out the door. Solvent vapor plus an ignition source is a fire and code problem, not an inconvenience.

What your shop can check — and where to stop

Your crew can handle the low-risk items: reading and logging the manometer, inspecting and changing filters, checking that gaskets seal and latches pull tight, keeping drains and air lines clean, confirming breakers are on and E-stops are pulled out, and clearing overspray from accessible surfaces.

Stop at anything involving the gas train, burner adjustment, high-voltage wiring, drive components, damper actuators, or defeating a safety device. The components that actually wear out

Most of what we replace on older booths is predictable: belts and sheaves, motor bearings, damper actuators and linkage, door gaskets and latch hardware, manometer tubing clogged with overspray, light fixtures and ballasts, temperature sensors, and control relays and contactors. That is normal wear on equipment moving a lot of air through a dirty environment.

The failures that hurt are the ones that take out a whole day. A seized damper actuator during a busy week costs several times the price of the part in moved appointments. That is the argument for scheduled paint booth repair and maintenance instead of waiting for a breakdown, and for a documented booth evaluation if you inherited a unit and don't know its history.

Why is my Accudraft booth not reaching temperature?

Usually loaded filters, a damper not fully repositioning for bake, a burner not staging up, gas pressure dropping under load, or a sensor reading incorrectly. Which one applies depends on your booth's firing type and control generation, so have it verified on site.

How often should paint booth filters be changed?

Go by manometer reading and your manufacturer's stated pressure limits, not the calendar. A production shop loads filters far faster than one spraying a few panels a week. Log readings weekly and the interval becomes obvious.

Can I reset a control panel fault myself?

Resetting once is reasonable. Resetting repeatedly is not — a fault that keeps returning means a device is doing its job and something upstream is wrong. Never bypass an interlock to keep production moving.
