- Openings that leak. Conveyor and monorail slots are permanent gaps that shift the pressure balance and pull unfiltered plant air in.
- Heavier coatings. High-solids and 2K industrial materials put more solids into the exhaust filter per hour than refinish work.
- Higher delivery volume. Pressure pots, meter-mix systems, and bulk supply move far more paint per hour than a cup gun, and overspray loads the bank accordingly.
- Narrow service windows. Multi-shift plants have little planned downtime, so work gets deferred until something breaks.

Set service intervals by run hours, not the calendar
A quarterly PM makes sense when a booth runs fifteen hours a week. It means little when the same booth runs a hundred. Put an hour meter on the exhaust fan starter and drive the schedule off that number.
- Intake filters change on accumulated hours and visible loading, not on a date.
- Exhaust filters change on static pressure read at the gauge, not on a guess.
- Bearings, belts, and drives get inspected on hours, because hours consume their life.
- Full booth service lands on a run-hour threshold you set with your service provider, then adjust once a few intervals show what is wearing.

Where production booths wear first
Fan bearings, belts, and drives
Continuous duty is hard on rotating equipment. Belts glaze and stretch, sheaves wear grooves that let the belt ride low, and bearings that would last years on intermittent duty start talking in a fraction of that time. A technician listens for bearing noise, checks belt deflection and alignment, and inspects the wheel for uneven overspray buildup, which throws it out of balance and kills bearings.
Static pressure creep
Loading filters raise resistance, airflow falls, and the booth stops doing its job well before anyone calls it broken. Watch the trend across months, not just across a shift. A clean-filter baseline that has drifted upward over a year points to a fouled plenum, a coated wheel, or a partially blocked stack. Amp draw, VFD settings, and damper drift
Amp draw is the cheapest diagnostic on the booth, so trend it. A motor pulling more current than it did six months ago is fighting something: a failing bearing, a loaded wheel, a damper out of position. VFD setpoint drift is just as common. Someone bumps a value during troubleshooting, nobody writes it down, and the booth runs off-balance for months.
Makeup air burners and plenum contamination
The makeup air unit works as hard as the booth, and constant burner cycling wears ignition components, flame sensors, and gas valves. Overspray past a bypassed filter settles in the supply plenum and on ceiling filter frames, then sheds months later as dirt in the finish with no obvious source.

Dry filter and waterwash booths need different programs
Dry filter booths
Filter discipline: correct media, correct fit, correct change trigger. Gaps at the edge of a bank let overspray bypass into the fan and stack, which is how plenums and wheels get contaminated. On heavy work, a coarse pre-filter ahead of the final media usually costs less over a year than one expensive filter run to blowout.
Waterwash booths
Waterwash adds chemistry on top of the mechanical program. Sludge accumulates, nozzles clog, flood sheets go uneven, and water chemistry drifts out of range so paint stops detackifying properly. A technician checks pump pressure, nozzle and header condition, flood sheet evenness across the full width, water level, sludge volume, and how the chemical feed is actually dosing rather than how it is supposed to.
What a technician checks on a production-line walkthrough
A walkthrough on an industrial booth is not a glance and a filter change. Expect the technician to:
- Pull run hours and compare them against the last service interval.
- Record static pressure at intake and exhaust against the clean-filter baseline.
- Measure motor amp draw against nameplate and against history.
- Inspect wheel, bearings, belts, and sheaves for buildup, wear, and imbalance.
- Verify airflow direction and balance with doors and line openings in normal running position, not sealed for the test.
- Check makeup air burner operation, controls, and safeties.
- Inspect filter seating for bypass and confirm the media suits the coating.
- Look at the plenum, ceiling filters, and interior surfaces for buildup.

Can service be done without shutting down the line?

Does a waterwash booth need more service than a dry filter booth?
Different, not more. Waterwash adds pumps, nozzles, sludge removal, and chemistry, and neglected chemistry causes problems quickly. Dry filter booths are simpler but less forgiving of a missed change, since a blown-through filter contaminates the fan and ductwork directly.
