Buying a Used Paint Booth: What to Inspect First

Buying a used paint booth can be a good move — plenty of shops run solid production booths they bought secondhand. But the purchase price is the smallest and most visible number in the deal, and it is the one the seller wants you looking at. Everything that turns a booth in somebody else's building into a booth spraying work in yours is where the money and the risk live.
Price out the whole deal, not the booth
Write the purchase down as line items, not a single figure. You are buying:
- Purchase price — usually the smallest line.
- Removal and disassembly — labor, rigging, lifts.
- Transport — trucking, oversize permits, loading and unloading.
- Missing or damaged parts.
- Refurbishment — cleaning, panel repair, seals, filters, lighting.
- Site preparation — slab work, pit excavation, roof penetrations.
- Utility upgrades — gas capacity, electrical service, make-up air.
- Permits and licensed trades.
- Installation and commissioning — assembly, ductwork, balancing, startup.
Fill each line with quotes from your own vendors first. A booth that looks cheap on line one is often the most expensive option once the other nine are populated — the same math you would run deciding whether to repair or replace an aging booth.
Get the data plate before you inspect anything
Photograph the data plate: brand, model, serial number, year, configuration. Do this before you look at a single panel. Without it you cannot confirm parts availability or find documentation. Orphaned equipment — discontinued lines, defunct manufacturers, shop-built one-offs — is the biggest hidden risk in the used market. A booth you cannot get parts for is a booth you cannot keep running.
Take the brand and model to someone who works on that equipment daily and ask whether structural parts, burner components, and control boards are still obtainable. Will the used paint booth actually fit?
Two measurements decide this: interior working dimensions against the vehicles you spray, including the door opening; and exterior footprint plus service clearances against your building — ceiling height, clear span, column locations, and room to reach the fan, plenum, and filter banks.
Confirm the airflow configuration — downdraft, semi-downdraft, side-draft, or crossdraft. Pit requirements are a routine deal-killer; excavating a pit in an existing slab is major site work, and a downdraft booth without one is not a downdraft booth. Shell, structure, and overspray
Look for rust at panel bases, along seams, and inside any pit — base corrosion is where a booth quietly dies. Check door alignment and operation, seal condition, glass panels, and wall integrity. Note any panel that has been cut or patched; that raises structural and code questions.
Heavy overspray buildup is two problems at once — a cleaning cost and a fire-code issue. Degraded seals and contaminated interiors are also a leading cause of dirt in the finish. Budget a full booth cleaning and restoration as a line item.
Mechanical: fans, ducting, and make-up air
Inspect the fan wheel for imbalance, corrosion, and buildup. Check bearings for play, belts and sheaves for wear, and read the motor nameplate — voltage and phase have to match your service. Assume exhaust ducting is neither reusable nor included.
The make-up air unit deserves separate attention. A booth sold without an AMU, or with a tired one, is a fundamentally different purchase, and AMU problems are expensive to fix after the fact.
Heat, burner, and gas train
Examine the burner assembly, controls, and gas train, then look hard at the heat exchanger — a cracked or heavily corroded exchanger can end the deal on its own. Confirm the fuel type matches your facility; natural gas and propane are not interchangeable, and conversions are not free. Heat problems are why many used booths never reach cure temperature.
Electrical, controls, lighting, and fire protection
Controls
Inspect the panel for corrosion, heat damage, and amateur rework, and ask whether the control generation is still supported. Obsolete proprietary controls are the most underrated risk in the used market — a mechanically sound booth with a dead controller is a project, not a purchase. Check VFDs, sensors, and interlocks individually.
Lighting
Count fixtures and note type and condition. Yellowed older fixtures are both a color-matching problem and an energy cost. If you will replace them anyway, price LED lighting upgrades into the deal up front.
Fire protection
Document what detection and suppression provisions exist. These requirements are driven by the authority having jurisdiction at your new site, not the old one.
See it run, then ask for the history
Have the seller power the booth up while you watch. See the burner light and cycle. Listen to the fan and feel for vibration. Watch the lights, the doors close and seal, and the controls respond. A booth sold as "it ran fine when we shut it down" and a booth you watched run are not the same purchase.
Then ask for service records, filter change intervals, usage hours, why it is being sold, and known faults. Absence of records is itself information — and many signs that a booth needs repair show up in a five-minute run cycle.
Code follows the site, not the booth
Relocating a booth generally means meeting current code at the new address rather than inheriting the old installation's grandfathering. Ventilation, electrical classification, fire suppression, and gas piping all get evaluated fresh. Confirm what applies with your authority having jurisdiction before you buy, not after the truck arrives.
Walk-away signals
- No data plate, or one removed or painted over.
- An unsupported model with no parts path.
- A cracked or badly corroded heat exchanger.
- Heavy corrosion at panel bases or in the pit.
- Panels that have been cut or modified.
- Obsolete or dead proprietary controls.
- It does not fit your building, or the pit work is out of scope.
- A seller who will not let you see it run.
Any one of these can be survivable with the right discount and plan. Two or three together mean you are buying somebody else's problem. Get the booth independently evaluated before you commit, and use the findings as your negotiating basis.
