Heavy equipment booth service is a different job than servicing a collision shop. The parts are bigger, heavier, and filthier on arrival, the coatings are heavier, and the machines that carry the work in and out beat up the booth itself. If you run an equipment dealership refinishing shop, an implement plant, a rebuild line, or an ag repair facility, the schedule printed in your booth manual understates what your booth needs. Agricultural equipment paint booth service has to be built around soil load, part geometry, and seasonal workload, not a generic hour count.
The dirtiest inbound parts of any industry
Nothing else comes into a booth like a combine head or a track loader. Machines arrive caked with soil, crop residue, manure, fertilizer salts, concrete dust, and grease. Even after a wash, that material hides in weld seams and box sections, and it keeps releasing as the part warms during flash and bake.
That means the wash and prep stage upstream of the booth largely determines how fast the booth degrades. A shop with a proper wash bay, adequate dwell time, and a real drying step will run filters substantially longer than a shop that hits the machine with a pressure washer and rolls it in wet. Soil load also drives cleanout intervals. Dust that settles on walls, ledges, light lenses, and structural steel gets re-entrained every time a forklift moves through or a door cycles. Booth interiors here go from clean to marginal in a fraction of the time an automotive booth takes.
Airflow shadowing around big, awkward parts
Booms, buckets, frames, tanks, and combine heads are not car bodies. They are irregular, they have deep recesses and hollow sections, and they block airflow. A downdraft booth is designed to sweep overspray down through the floor, but complex geometry creates shadowed pockets where air stalls and turbulence where air rolls back onto the surface. Overspray settles instead of sweeping out.
Three things make it worse in this industry:
- Parts sit on the floor rather than racked at height, blocking the grates directly beneath the work.
- Multiple parts get staged in one booth to make a cycle count, crowding the airflow path.
- A booth sized for a machine at rest is not sized for the machine plus the operator and a forklift.
A technician will measure airflow at the face, check pressure drop across the filter banks, and look at how the part is positioned. Sometimes the fix is mechanical. Often it is a staging change.
Heavy coatings load exhaust media fast
Ag and construction refinishing runs high-build, high-solids enamels and 2K urethanes over large surface areas in heavy passes. Overspray volume per unit is enormous compared to a fender. Exhaust filters plug faster, and they plug unevenly, because the operator works one end of the machine at a time.
Loaded exhaust media raises static pressure, which drops airflow, which lets more overspray settle on the part and the booth interior. Everything gets worse together. That is why the manometer matters more here than almost anywhere else, and why a daily reading is the first habit to fix.
Intake filters get hit from the other direction by yard dust, field soil tracked in on tires, and grinding dust from corrosion repair. Intake filter selection and change intervals deserve a second look in any shop where the booth sits near a blast or grinding station.

Blast media and cross contamination
Many equipment shops run a wash bay and a blast area near the booth, and blast media migrates. It rides in on the part, on the operator, on wheels, and on air currents, and it is abrasive enough to show up in the finish as a distinct defect. Media in the booth points at shop layout, door discipline, or room pressurization rather than booth hardware.
Physical abuse: grates, walls, lenses, and doors
Tracked and wheeled machines wreck booths. This is the wear category that separates these shops from every other industry.
Floor grates and the pit
Grates rated for foot traffic and a car are not rated for a skid steer or a loaded forklift. Bent or displaced grates change floor airflow distribution and create trip hazards. Pit filters get crushed or shifted, letting overspray into the pit and eventually the exhaust plenum.
Walls, lights, and seals
Buckets and boom tips gouge wall panels and crack light lenses. A cracked lens is not just a light problem. It breaks the seal that isolates the fixture from the spray space, which is a safety item worth prompt attention.
Drive-in doors
Large drive-through doors take constant abuse here. Worn seals and out-of-square frames leak air, which unbalances the booth and pulls unfiltered shop air across the work.
Seasonality: schedule service in the off-season
Ag shops see demand concentrate hard. Pre-season equipment refresh compresses a year of booth hours into a few months, then the booth sits. Construction rebuild work follows its own rhythm. Either way, you know when your peak is.
Schedule the heavy work in the trough. Filter bank replacement, a full booth cleanout, burner and air makeup service, grate repair, and lighting work all cost less in downtime when the booth is not booked. Going into peak season on year-old media and a dirty interior is how shops end up doing rework in their busiest weeks. Colorado shops have a second reason to plan ahead. Makeup air heating on a large enclosure is a real operating cost, and a booth with leaking doors or a dirty burner burns fuel to heat air it immediately loses.

- Manometer and static pressure readings across the intake and exhaust banks, compared against design values.
- Airflow balance between supply and exhaust, including how the booth behaves with the drive-in door sealed.
- Filter condition in all stages, including pit and floor media that shops often forget.
- Burner, air makeup, and cure performance. A booth that reaches temperature on a fender may not on a frame.

Why does dirt keep showing up in our finish even after a cleanout?
Usually because the source is upstream. Residual soil in seams releases during bake, blast media migrates from an adjacent area, or airflow is shadowed around a large part. A cleanout resets the booth but does not fix the input.
Can a booth sized for smaller work handle full machines?
Sometimes, with staging changes. Sometimes not. The question is whether airflow can still sweep the part once it is in the booth, and whether the heat system can bring that thermal mass to temperature. An evaluation answers it with measurements.
