A hull, a deck, or a tower can occupy the booth for days, with prep, primer, block, topcoat, and cure all inside one long occupancy. The booth may see only a handful of true cycles in a month, but each one carries enormous value.

That changes the economics of failure. A burner that drops out at hour six of a cure does not cost you a morning. It costs the finish on a part that took two weeks to prep, and rework on a hull is not a buff and polish. It is sanding, re-priming, and re-spraying hundreds of square feet.

Restriction does not stay an exhaust problem

The fan works harder and runs hotter, belts wear faster, and bearing life shortens. Supply and exhaust drift out of balance, and the cabin goes either positive enough to push air out through door seams or negative enough to pull dirty shop air in. Fiberglass dust is abrasive and it goes everywhere

Fiberglass and filler dust is hard, sharp, and light enough to stay airborne a long time. It produces a predictable set of wear patterns. Fan wheels erode and lose balance, which you hear as a change in tone and feel as vibration. Light lenses cloud and pit, dropping usable light well before a lamp fails. Intake media loads from the shop side. Door seals abrade. Control enclosures collect a fine layer that holds moisture against metal.

Cure windows, temperature control, and humidity

Two-part polyurethane topcoats are less forgiving than most automotive systems. Flash windows matter, cure schedules run long, and both temperature and humidity affect flow, gloss, and hardness. That puts load on the heat side: burner reliability, calibrated control, and stable airflow through a long cure all become part of finish quality. A booth that swings ten degrees mid-cure will eventually produce a finish you cannot sell.

High-gloss topcoats also demand near-zero airborne dust and good lighting. Tipping, rolling, and spraying large surfaces means seeing flow and wet edge in real time, and yellowed lenses or a layout never designed for a 45-foot part work against that. Confirm cure schedules, temperature ranges, and humidity limits against your coating manufacturer's data sheets, not shop habit.

Salt air, humidity, and Gulf coast corrosion

Near saltwater, the environment attacks the booth itself. We see it plainly on the Florida coast: cabinet panels corroding at seams and fastener penetrations, hardware seizing, fan housings and shafts pitting, and electrical enclosures collecting corrosion on terminals and grounds.

Those failures tend to be electrical and intermittent, which makes them frustrating to chase. A control that works Monday and not Thursday is usually a corroded connection, not a failed board. This is not the same checklist as a collision shop visit. Expect a technician to work through:

  • Airflow uniformity end to end. Long enclosures develop dead zones when filter loading is uneven across a big bank.
  • Static pressure at intake and exhaust, against the booth's own clean baseline, not a generic number.
  • Fan wheel condition and balance, plus bearings, belts, and sheaves, with abrasive erosion in mind.
  • Light output and lens condition, judged where the operator works, not at the ceiling.
  • Burner and control accuracy through a full cycle, including sensor calibration.
  • Cabinet integrity: panel corrosion, seals, door alignment, impact damage from lift traffic.
  • Electrical enclosures: corrosion, moisture intrusion, connection tightness, grounding.
  • Cleanout condition: gelcoat buildup on walls, floor, plenum surfaces, and doors.

Staging damage deserves its own mention. Scaffolding and lifts move inside the cabin constantly, so panels dent, seals tear, lights get struck, and grating bends. None of it is dramatic alone. All of it degrades the booth's ability to hold a clean air pattern.

Haul-out concentrates booth hours into a compressed window, which is exactly when you cannot afford downtime. Do the heavy work in the off period: full inspection, filter bank replacement, fan and bearing service, lighting, control calibration, and a complete cleanout. Keep a lighter in-season cadence on filters and pressure readings.
