Why cold air makes your booth work harder

When outdoor temperatures drop, your spray booth has to pull in and heat that cold makeup air before it ever reaches the panel. In Denver and Dallas–Fort Worth, where winter mornings can start below freezing, that means your air makeup unit (AMU) and burner run longer and harder just to hit setpoint. Cold, dense air also slows solvent evaporation and lengthens cure times, so the bake cycles that worked all summer may leave finishes soft in January. The result is a double hit: higher gas consumption and slower throughput.

Pre-season AMU and burner inspection

The heart of cold-weather performance is the air makeup unit and its burner. Before the season starts, have these checked: burner ignition, flame sensor, and gas train (the components most likely to fail on a cold start); belts, bearings, and the supply blower, which work harder against denser winter air; temperature controls and modulation, so the burner actually reaches and holds setpoint; and gas supply and pressure, especially if multiple heated units share a line. Filters, dampers, and seals

And check door seals and panel gaskets, since leaks let heated air escape and cold air in, driving up gas use and creating temperature swings. Warm-up procedures and realistic bake expectations

On cold mornings, don't expect the booth to hit bake temperature as fast as it does in summer. Build a warm-up step into your routine: run the booth up to temperature before the first job so the cabin, the substrate, and the equipment are all warm. A panel that's been sitting in a cold shop overnight is a heat sink that will drag out your cure. Follow your paint manufacturer's temperature and time specs, and confirm you're measuring actual cabin and part temperature, not just the controller setpoint.

Watch for condensation and moisture

Cold weather brings moisture problems that can wreck a finish. Let cold panels acclimate before spraying to avoid condensation. Drain traps and check your air dryer and separators, since water in compressed air lines is more common in winter and causes fisheyes, blushing, or adhesion issues.

Schedule a pre-winter PM now

The best time to find a burner or airflow problem is before the cold arrives — not on a morning when you've got cars stacked up and a booth that won't heat.
